Hindu weddings are famous all over the world due to their beautiful traditions, cultural rituals and the grandeur with which they are celebrated. Hindu itself is a land of great cultural and religious diversities. Each culture in Hindu itself has varied wedding traditions.

Rituals Before Wedding

  • Engagement Ceremony

Engagement is basically the formal marriage announcement not only in Hindu weddings but in other religions as well. In this pre-wedding ceremony the bride and groom exchange rings. in this ceremony mostly invite one with close relatives and friends from both bride and groom’s side. Usually, engagement is mostly an intimate one with close relatives and friends from both bride and groom’s side, so that the couple gets to know each other well before marriage.

  • Mehendi Ceremony

Mehendi is another fun part of weddings in which the palms of the bride and groom are decorated with motifs using Henna before the night of the wedding. This beautiful event takes place with a lot of dancing and music by the family members and friends. Sometimes, the name of the groom is hidden on the bride’s hands which the groom is expected to find later on their wedding night.

  • Tilak/Sagan Ceremony

Tilak Ceremony was the first step to the bond between the two families of bride and groom. This event mostly takes place in the groom’s residence. For that from bride side all male members visit to put Kumkum or vermilion on his forehead. There are many versions of the Tilak ceremony take place in different parts of the state.

  • Haldi Ceremony

One of the most fun events during a Hindu wedding is the Haldi Ceremony. One can find variants of this event in different parts of the country. In this ceremony, a paste of Haldi is applied to the bride and the groom’s body before their wedding day. After that bathed in milk to give their skin a divine glow on the wedding day.

Rituals On The Wedding Day

  • Holy fire

The central ritual of every Hindu wedding for bride and groom is the saptapadi around the holy fire. The couple together around the sacred fire in seven steps. The rituals begin when the priest starts chanting then the bride and groom approach each other in an area purified with piles of rice. Holding right hands of the bride has to reach across her body to grab the groom’s right hand then the couple takes seven steps together around the holy fire. These seven steps symbolize eternal friendship and the couple’s journey through life together. The bride leads first three circles after that groom leads in the four circles.

Each round taking the blessed :

  1. As long as we live and we will respect each other in the future.
  2. We will equally face the physical, spiritual and mental condition in our life.
  3. We will share our feeling and get wealth and prosper together.
  4. Happiness and harmony will be acquired through love in our life together.
  5. We will have brave your children together.
  6. Remain faithful, longevity and self-restraint.
  7. We will be lifetime partners throughout my life.

  • Sindoor

All woman after marriage is supposed to apply sindoor. It is traditionally applied at the beginning along the parting-line of a woman’s hair or as a dot on the forehead. The ingredients used to prepare the sindoor have medicinal values which help to control your body temperature and blood pressure.

  • Var Mala

The Var mala is the exchange of garlands between the bride and the groom this becomes a very funny ritual now. It is the very first ritual in Hindu weddings.

  • Blessing Ceremony

The final ceremony after the wedding is the  Aashirvaad Ceremony. This is very important event to get the blessings of the elderly members of the family and other well-wishers. In this ceremony, the newlywed couple touches the feet of the elders and get the blessing.  Meanwhile, the guest’s flowers on the couple, wishing them a happy married life. After that, the groom’s family present to the bride some sarees, and the bride’s parents gift various groom a ring or a watch.
